It’s more like a Wagnerian music-drama, a somber story built around intimations of doom and orchestrated with a soundtrack of pounding drums and high-pitched wailings and ululations. Unlike “Star Wars,” though, Villeneuve’s “Dune” isn’t a sparky, upbeat space opera.

Overall, the “good” characters are preternaturally gifted, some with witchy mental powers, others with samurai-like fighting skills, while the “bad” are obscene monsters of sadism, greed and ambition. The book’s plot - to which the new film sticks closely - features a galactic empire riven by intrigue, a shadowy sisterhood called the Bene Gesserit, gigantic sandworms that surface from underground like Moby-Dick rising from the deep, subtle political maneuverings and shocking betrayals, a native population called the Fremen who await a promised messiah, and, not least, the young Paul Atreides, who is troubled by strange dreams and, perhaps, an even stranger destiny. #CHILDREN OF DUNE BOOK REVIEW UPGRADE#
But Vader is given a pretty major power upgrade and much of th. A pretty cool take on Star Wars and better than many of the other (no longer canon) comics. I wasn't aware of the new Marvel Star Wars comics until I stumbled on this series. But I don’t think I’ll read more of the series. You can’t tell me that no idiot has ever been that wasted and tried it out.Ĭhildren of Dune was entertaining enough. Herbert introduces this idea as it happens and explains that it was something kids regularly did with their hands for fun. I mean, I find it really hard to believe that Leto was the first to get high on drugs, pull on a sand trout skin, and realise it gave them superpowers. Leto’s transformation really lacks supporting explanation. Another plot point which has been hinted at for three novels essentially came out of left field. What appeared to be major plot points were essentially over before the halfway mark. I think the issue was that Children of Dune didn’t feel as well constructed. Children of Dune was another few steps down the quality ladder. I felt Dune Messiah was a lesser novel in every way, whilst still enjoyable. But it was only adequate.ĭune was a great novel. And I think Children of Dune certainly falls into the category of “a book I have read”. Usually, a gap of this much between finishing and reviewing suggests I wasn’t left with any strong impressions of the book. This review is being written almost a week after I finished reading it. And their grandmother wants to test them with the gom jabbar, which could potentially leave them dead. Some of the Fremen want to return to the old ways, and want them dead. House Corrino is plotting to take over Dune, and wants them dead. Their aunt Alia is possessed by her ancestor, Baron Harkonnen, and wants them dead. Paul Atreides’ twin children, Leto and Ghanima, are sick of being treated as children and are ready to rule. If you have all your ancestors’ memories, is that better or worse than having them watch you masturbate from the afterlife?
